I went for lunch at a lovely cafe/diner called Dock Lunch with some excellent friends recently. The diner had these beautiful tiles on their walls, so I snapped a reference pic and set out to recreate them as a procedural texture.
To create the pattern I used SVG nodes to draw out the shapes into repeatable pattern. I did each shape by hand to get that hand painted look.
By creating the shapes in groups, it was very easy to mask out each group to give them a distinct color.
Here are a few more color variations.
If I had more time to spend tinkering around with patterns, I would have created several different repeatable patterns with the same shapes. I pleased with the result, but I think more time could be spent refining the damaged surfaces of some of the tiles. Despite a few issues, I'm happy to be able to achieve something like this in Substance Designer in only a couple of hours.
